General Vision
The ASV philosophy and mission are the foundation of our comprehensive and challenging curriculum. The resulting academic program draws on elements of many systems of education and serves both international and Spanish students. Students graduate proficient in at least two languages, English and Spanish. The ASV curriculum is a cohesive and continuous plan that is skills-based, content rich, conceptually structured and chronologically articulated. Regardless of the content area, our approach to learning is an integrated one promoting inquiry, collaboration, and the development of cognitive, social and emotional awareness.
Eleventh and twelfth grades are a comprehensive two-year program that prepares students for rigorous university study. All eleventh grade students complete the same core course requirements: the Philosophy/Theory of Knowledge course, participation in the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) program and the Extended Essay. These requirements reflect our belief that all ASV students become well-rounded, thoughtful, globally-minded citizens of the world.
Students select their program of study for the final two years of high school:
• Social Sciences
• Health Sciences
• Technological Sciences.
Each major program of study has its own specific required and optional courses.
In addition to selecting one of the three programs of studies, students must decide whether to participate in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program and/or the Spanish National Program. ASV was authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program by the IBO in the 2004-05 school year by the IBO organization. Since that date, students at ASV have the option of following the IB Diploma Program alone or in combination with the Spanish National Program. This is an important decision that ASV students make in collaboration with their family, the Guidance Counsellor and the High School administration.
Students have three options:
• Spanish National Program
• IB Diploma + Spanish National Program
• IB Diploma
We encourage you to contact the Vice-Principal/IB Diploma Coordinator for any questions about the academic program.
