Symbolism in Art
Field Trip to Galeria Luis Adelantado

In the visual arts, the use of symbols can concentrate or intensify the meaning and impact. In the arts, symbols have been used in works throughout the ages to transmit a message or idea, for example, the religious symbolism of ancient Egyptian art, Gothic art, and Renaissance art. Symbolist painters rejected Realism and Impressionism. They felt that art should not simply depict, but should suggest ideas, moods, and psychological states through color, line, and form. Their subjects were often mythological, mystical, or fantastic.

The 11th grade art classes viewed the work of Marco Castro, a 26 year old Mexican Artist. With the help of Dr. Michele Bertholf the students were exposed to the very powerful symbolism in Castro’s work. The students also participated in drawing exercises outside the gallery in the historical center of Valencia.
